One of our favorite Sunday drives (yes, we still do these) is down through The Mission Trail and through the village of Socorro. Drive by open farm fields, just plowed and smelling like rich damp soil. Roll down your windows or drop the top to fully enjoy Socorro, and the smell of flowers, trees, and the fine aromas coming from hole-in-the-wall eateries. Try getting off the beaten path and you'll be sharing country lanes with horseback riders and John Deere tractors as they drop clods of earth along the roadside. There is a subtle pride here in finding several generations of family tradition living on the same land, in the same home, at the same pace as the world once worked. Here you will find newer neighborhoods with homes $80,000 to $150,000. And you will find decades old homes on large lots on country lanes. And you will find estate homes mixed in through it all. There is just enough shopping here that you may only rarely venture into the big city. Good restaurants. Good antique shopping, and lots of charm. All this and a very quick drive to Mexico, Interstate 10, Cattleman's, and much more. Drive a little, save a lot.
